Flooring That Lasts, Safety That Endures

What Types of Flooring Systems Are Best for Industrial Facilities?

Seamless epoxy floor coating in a large industrial warehouse facility

At a Glance

  • Epoxy flooring — the go-to for medium to heavy-duty warehouses and manufacturing; available in self-levelling and roll-on
  • Polyurethane cement — heavy-duty performance for extreme temperatures, wet areas and food processing environments
  • Chemical resistant coatings — for facilities regularly exposed to harsh chemicals, solvents or volatile compounds
  • ESD flooring — essential for electronics, flammable materials or any environment where electrostatic discharge is a risk
  • Not sure which system suits your facility? The right choice depends on traffic, atmospheric exposures, OH&S obligations and your existing substrate

Choosing the wrong flooring system for your facility is a costly mistake. Different environments place different demands on floors. From heavy machinery and harsh chemicals to extreme temperatures and strict compliance requirements. Choosing the right system for your specific needs will reduce maintenance costs, improve safety, and extend the life of your facility.

At Ascoat, we provide tailored solutions to suit your facility, regardless of the technical challenges. We’ll walk you through the types of floor coatings we offer, and how they can benefit your workspace.

Epoxy Floor Coatings

For warehouses, manufacturing facilities or other medium to heavy-duty industrial environments, epoxy flooring remains one of the most popular flooring solutions.

Epoxy flooring is made from a mix of hardener and resin that, when cured, forms a very durable barrier. It is the ideal all-rounder for businesses needing a balance of durability, affordability and ease of maintenance.

Epoxy Systems offer:

  • Non-slip protection up to P5 (the highest non-slip rating)
  • Outstanding cleanability
  • Chemical, moisture and stain resistance
  • Abrasion resistance
  • Attractive finishes

We offer two main types of epoxy flooring: self-levelling and roll-on epoxy.

Self-levelling epoxy

Self-levelling epoxy systems are designed to level evenly across a surface, filling minor cracks and other substrate imperfections before curing into a seamless film. It is installed as a multiple layer process to ensure a finish that offers higher resistance to heavy traffic and chemicals.

Roll-on epoxy

Roll-on epoxy is the go-to solution for general purpose, light to medium-duty industrial applications. The thinner film build makes it well suited to foot traffic areas and facilities where demarcation is required to meet OH&S obligations. The speed of installation makes roll-on systems economical, and a very beneficial option when choosing your next floor.

The Ascoat Epoxy Difference: We prioritise environmentally responsible product selection. Where possible, we specify Green Star-compliant systems without compromising on quality or durability.

Polyurethane Cement

For heavy-duty working environments, polyurethane cement, or “poly-cement”, is one of the toughest industrial flooring system available. It is made by combining polyurethane resin with modified cement to create a highly-resistant flooring system for the most demanding environments. This flooring is ideal for commercial kitchens, cold storage areas, food processing zones, wet areas, and other applications where heavy traffic meets extreme temperatures.

Polyurethane cement offers:

  • Extreme temperature resistance from -25°C to +120°C
  • Antimicrobial properties
  • Resistance to thermal shock, chemicals and abrasion
  • Non-slip protection up to P5 (the highest non-slip rating)
  • OH&S compliance as set by HACCP, TGA, AQIS and Food Safe standards

A variety of finishes are available, from semi-gloss to matte, so you won’t have to compromise on safety or aesthetic appeal.

Chemical Resistant Coatings

Industries where harsh chemical cleaning and spills are common, such as pharmaceutical facilities, need floors that won’t degrade when exposed to volatile compounds. Ascoat uses a variety of specialised resin technologies, including vinyl ester, phenolic, novolac and polyurethane to deliver chemical resistant floor coatings that are safe, compliant, and designed to last.

These systems offer:

  • A heavy-duty impermeable barrier
  • Increased abrasion resistance
  • Excellent adhesion properties
  • Long-term durability
  • Ease of cleanability and maintenance

Our team will help you choose the right chemical resistant system for your facility, based on your specific needs and budget.

Electro Static Dissipative (ESD) flooring

Also known as “anti-static” flooring, ESD flooring prevents electrostatic build-up by dissipating the charge through the floor. This is critical for industries dealing with electronics or flammable and explosive chemicals, where an electrostatic spark can have serious consequences.

ESD flooring offers:

  • Prevention of electrostatic discharge
  • Protection of sensitive electronic equipment
  • Suitability for high-traffic, demanding environments

As Australia’s leading ESD flooring installer, we maintain an intimate knowledge of international ESD standards and continuously update our practice to reflect them.

How to Choose The Best Flooring System

The right system comes down to a handful of practical factors specific to your site. Here’s what to consider before making a decision:

How Heavy is the Traffic?

Consider not only foot traffic, but also forklifts, pallet jacks, and any other heavy machinery. How often is machinery moved around? Are there localised stress points from point loading?

Will Floors Regularly be Exposed to Chemicals or Moisture?

Cleaning chemicals, oils, fuels and solvents will all affect flooring performance differently. Understanding which chemicals are most present will help determine the level of resistance required. If your facility is frequently exposed to moisture, from the environment or regular washdowns, it may also require more moisture-tolerant systems.

What are the OH&S Obligations?

Does your industry have regulatory requirements for flooring, such as non-slip or ESD requirements, or food safety compliance? Specialised flooring may be required to meet your obligations.

Do You Need a Decorative or High-Visibility Finish?

Some facilities benefit from visually distinct flooring beyond aesthetics alone.

  • Coloured systems can define working zones such as high/low care areas, traffic lanes, walkways or loading bays
  • Line markings can guide foot traffic, highlight walkways or outline restricted areas
  • Decorative flooring options like vinyl flake systems can also reduce the visible impact of wear and tear

What’s the Existing Flooring?

Your existing substrate has a significant impact on what can be installed. Concrete is an ideal base for most flooring systems, while timber or tiles may require specialised primers or additional surface preparation.
