Flooring That Lasts, Safety That Endures

Three Blue Ducks

Restaurant Flooring

The project description

Silver Grey Polyurethane

In 2025, Three Blue Ducks Restaurant, located within the UrbnSurf facility in Tullamarine, approached Ascoat for a kitchen flooring upgrade.

With a focus on ethical, organic, authentic, and delicious food, Three Blue Ducks is passionate about quality—as are we— so we knew it was a project we wanted to take on.

The nature of restaurant kitchens means that a high-performance flooring solution that meets strict safety and hygiene standards is the only option, and the flooring requirements for Three Blue Ducks were no different.

The list of considerations is long; hazards like grease and food debris, as well as wear from constant traffic, moisture, and heat, mean that restaurant floors must be non-porous, easy to clean, resistant to chemicals and temperature changes, and durable enough to avoid cracking or warping.

Comfort for staff is also important, as prolonged standing on hard surfaces causes fatigue, while compliance with health and safety codes, proper drainage, and ease of maintenance are essential. But with decades of expertise in restaurant kitchen floors, we knew just the right flooring for the job.

As with every commercial kitchen refurbishment, we began with a straightforward conversation to set the foundation for success. Three key requirements were established prior to the flooring upgrade:

  1. A full kitchen shutdown was essential; quality work cannot be completed in one or two days.
  2. All removable equipment had to be stripped out, ensuring complete access to the floor area.
  3. A durable trowel-on polyurethane flooring system was necessary to meet the demands of a high-traffic kitchen environment.

Once these conditions were agreed upon, the project moved forward with confidence. A 3-week shutdown was scheduled, and all portable equipment was removed to facilitate the work.

Scope of Work

  • Surface Preparation: Dustless diamond grinding was used to remove the existing thin-film epoxy. The substrate was then carefully inspected, and any compromised sections of cementitious screed were removed.
  • Reinstatement: Approximately 300 litres of epoxy screed were installed to rebuild the surface where needed.
  • Floor Installation: The team applied Ascoat PU at 6mm thickness, achieving a P5 non-slip texture, ideal for the hygiene and safety requirements of a commercial kitchen.
  • Finish: The final silver grey colour was chosen to provide a clean, modern aesthetic that brightens the space.

This upgrade ensures the restaurant’s kitchen is now equipped with a robust, hygienic, and visually appealing flooring solution built to withstand the demands of daily service.
