Yes, due to the large opening of the door way necessary for planes to safely enter and exit the hangar, the amount of light that streams into the area, especially if it’s West or North Facing… can adversely effect the appearance of the floor due to discolouration, fading or chalking. This is particularly evident with epoxy-based coatings, but less so with aliphatic polyurethane coatings which have vastly superior resistance to Ultra Violet exposure.

Skydrol is a purple coloured phosphate esther based fluid used in place of mineral based hydraulic fluid in the aviation industry due to it’s fire resistance and impressive ability to withstand temperature and pressure extremes. It is highly damaging fluid to most standard floor coatings and will therefore flooring specification choice will require careful consideration. Military aircraft can also use special petroleum based hydraulic fluids which also need to be taken into account.

In order to see if any parts might fall to the ground during servicing or any evidence of an oil or fluid leak, hangar floors are maintained meticulously and are light coloured to provide maximum contrast to highlight any leaks or parts that fall to the ground, additionally having strong light reflection off the floor allows excellent visibility for visual inspections.

In very large hangars, dedicated areas for workshop activity versus parking activity can exist, therefore it can be prudent to have more heavy-duty flooring in the service area versus the parking area, different slip resistance may also be desirable. Additionally it’s very common to have complex line marking in an aircraft hangar which can alert personnel to hazards or towing lanes or fire lanes which indicate areas that must be kept clear in case of emergencies.
